Judy Kosik, a 70-year-old from Scranton, Pa., voted for the first time. After being part of the 38 percent of Americans who don’t participate in elections, Kosik decided that this election her vote will matter.

According to The Washington Post, this is the first year Pennsylvania residents can cast ballots by mail without needing a reason. Kosik sat out all the elections she was eligible to vote in because she had no interest in voting and believed her vote wouldn’t make a difference.

Earlier last month, Kosik triple-checked to ensure she did it right and voted. According to AP News, 86.8 million people had voted in the presidential election as of Friday afternoon. AP’s analysis stated that more than 1 out of 4 of all ballots were cast either by new or infrequent voters.

Kosik wants Joe Biden to win because he cares about the people. A couple of states down from Pennsylvania, CBS news followed labor union activists as they conducted socially-distance door-knocking to encourage infrequent Florida voters to cast their vote for Joe Biden.

Although, not into politics, Kosik watched all the general election debates. She had many things to say about President Donald Trump, making her the opposite of someone who is apathetic about politics. According to the New York Times, before the Trump campaign takes a victory lap, data shows that in Pennsylvania Democrats are keeping pace. At least 1.9 million voters had returned ballots as of Thursday.

Millions of Americans want to be heard, including Kosik. Americans are turning out in record numbers despite the challenges of 2020. Below you will find a tweet by VOTE.org with a link to everything you need to vote.

Reflecting back on all those years of not voting, Kosik questioned her Americanism. “What kind of an American am I?” she asks, “At least, I’m a good American this time.”
